[ book tip by Mohamed Bary ] Are you a person who seeks accurate criteria to measure his educational progress? Or are you a person who is interested in pedagogy and its applications? Then Sociology in Educational Practice is the perfect academic book that provides a detailed analysis of correct education in the context of one's society.
Because the book focuses mainly on education in a sociological context, a collaborative effort of the two authors Clyde B. Moore (Professor of Education) and William E. Cole (Professor of Sociology), it provides and invaluable insight to the subject.
Although the book is a little outdated, it sets out the basis of American education, its ideologies, setting, and implications for those who experience it. Also, it elaborates on the crucial role that education plays in the formation of an individual and society as a whole.
Using a simple and plain style devoid of any linguistic bombasticism, the authors give practical advice to teachers and scholars on dealing with common educational problems unsolved to this day such as: ethnical diversity, cultural barriers, classroom environment, the relationship between peers and teachers and other common problems. The authors maintain an admirable neutrality throughout.
Despite the mastery of the writing style, the fact that two separate writers wrote the book, one can see a sharp stance between the authors' approach towards the subject. For example author William E.Cole, being a professor of sociology, focuses on sociological matters that show occasional integration with social philosophy and social economy, thus remaining distinct from Moore's educational advice and methodologies.
The book provides an accurate insight to the world of pedagogy both in the 1950s and our current era. Its ideas are the current basis for American education and provide a concise and an accurate way to evaluate schools and their policies. Not only that, but it also reveals certain aspects of American society that are a concomitant to American education.
I enjoyed the book, despite the availability of more up-to-date books on the subject, because it gives the reasons and wherefores behind certain educational instructions that are not clarified in a lot of modern educational books.
