[ book tip by Pepa Křen ] Jerome Klapka Jerome was born to the family of preacher Jerome Clapp Jerome and his wife Marguerite. His childhood wasn´t easy because of his family was quite poor. One of his brothers soon died. Later, because of the death of his father and money worries he had to leave his studies and start to earn his living himself. He started to work as a worker on the railway. Then he worked as a teacher and an amateur actor. After 3 years he left this job and began to write short humorous stories.
His most famous book is Three Men in a Boat. It is written as a diary of a 14-day-long trip down the Thames undertaken by 3 English gentlemen and a dog. It´s a funny and humorous book and it found lot of readers. These events really happened and the author experienced them, because he was one of these three gentlemen. The whole plot is inset with short independent stories, told by each of the men. Most of the humour of the book is based on dryness of the lifestyle of England in the 19th century and the beginning of 20th century. The main characters are typical gentlemen, great hypochondriacs and unhandy people. This is a good basis for great entertainment.
