In November 2008, around 500 publishers participated in BUCH WIEN 08, Austria’s first international book fair, which sought to make Vienna a hub for the trading of books between the East and the West. How successful it was should become clear at this year’s edition of the fair, which is being held from 12 - 15 November 2009.
Readme.cc will once again take part in this international book fair and its accompanying Reading Festival by helping run a stand for independent publishers. In so doing, the European platform for literature readme.cc is underscoring its desire to mediate between online literary activities and classic book industry events.
In the Forum Sachbuch at 4 pm on Thursday, 12 November, a panel will consider future trends. The discussion, organised by the Main Library in Vienna, one of readme.cc’s most important partners, will bring together Walter Grond, director of readme.cc, and Christian Jahl, head of Vienna’s Main Library.
They will explore the following questions: Is the e-book the book of the future? How will digitization impact on publishers, the book trade, and libraries? And how will it affect copyrighting? Will this new medium alter literature’s content and form?
In early 2009, working in association with the digital distribution service ordis.net, readme.cc developed the technical and logistical prerequisites for a readme.cc e-book server. The process drew on the experiences of this successful online music distribution service to create an e-book server for our international literature platform. Readme.cc will launch it in 2010 and offer its first readme.cc e-books.
Readme.cc e-books want to concentrate on high quality works in a multilingual context. In contrast to commercial servers, we will not give priority to bestsellers and high returns, but to literature that has a difficult time in the publishing world of today, whilst at the same time striving for fair conditions for both authors and publishers.
