[ book tip by Translated Tips ] Kirstin Breitenfellner writes about the German edition of Böse Geister
What mindset gives rise to political terrorism, how do people get others to follow them blindly and to kill other human beings? What kind of emotional detachment does it take to 'sacrifice' a stranger's life for the sake of an idea? And what does this all have to do with belief or the lack of belief often called nihilism? These questions are the point of departure for Fyodor M. Dostoevsky's third novel Böse Geister ['Evil Spirits' aka 'The Devils', 'The Demons' or 'The Possessed'], in a fortunate new and refreshing translation into German by Swetlana Geier. The book's most uncanny character, Peter Verkhovensky, was inspired by the young terrorist Sergei Nechaev. In 1871 Dostoevsky attended the trial of Nechaev's followers, while Nechaev himself was still being hunted for abroad. This more than 130-year-old study of a pseudo-liberal generation of parents and their fanatical children in the Russian provinces is as gripping and topical as ever. Though it should be noted, that it is one of Dostoevsky's most difficult novels, in fact, it is philosophically fascinating, but has its shortcomings as literature.
